Staff Spotlight: Peyton, Dementia Coordinator at Covenant Woods

Nov 14, 2025 | Uncategorized

At Covenant Woods, we believe that the people behind the care are what truly make our community exceptional. This month, we’re shining a light on Peyton, our passionate and devoted Dementia Coordinator, whose work in Memory Support enriches lives daily through purpose, compassion, and creativity.

With a degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Longwood University and certifications as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and CARES Dementia Specialist (C.D.S.), Peyton brings both heart and expertise to her role. She also happens to be a therapy dog handler—her dog, Keegan, accompanies her for visits that spark smiles and comfort.

A Day in the Life

Peyton’s days are full of variety and connection. She plans and leads 5–6 daily programs that address the five domains of Recreation Therapy: social, spiritual, cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being. Whether it’s a lively game, a quiet courtyard walk, or a special outing with the Lunch Bunch, Peyton ensures each activity is meaningful and engaging.

She recently teamed up with the physical therapy team to provide standing activities like bowling and ball tosses—an example of her collaborative spirit and creativity in care.

Supporting Residents & Families

For Peyton, supporting those living with dementia goes beyond scheduled programming. It’s about being a resource, an advocate, and a guide for families. She believes deeply in the power of intentionality—offering choices, practicing patience, and creating safe spaces where residents can feel joy, express themselves, and experience success in everyday moments.

“Recreation therapy is so unique in that leisure is at the forefront,” Peyton shares. “It gives people a chance to let their guard down and just be happy.”

A Personal Calling

Peyton’s calling began with a close family member’s dementia diagnosis, but her passion truly took root during a college internship in memory care. One resident, once overlooked and withdrawn, began blossoming under Peyton’s care—attending more activities, engaging socially, and even improving physically. “Watching her progress was incredible,” Peyton says. “It showed me that with patience and persistence, so much is possible.”

Beyond the Job

When she’s not at Covenant Woods, Peyton enjoys visiting with her therapy dog, raising service dogs, supporting her younger brothers at their games, and soaking up sunshine at the river or farmers markets. Her love for animals and helping others extends into every area of her life.

Advice for Families

If she could offer one piece of advice to families navigating a dementia diagnosis, it would be this: “Join your loved one’s reality. Don’t try to correct them—meet them where they are. It’s not just more comforting for them; it’s often the most loving thing you can do.”

We’re grateful to have Peyton as part of the Covenant Woods team. Her empathy, expertise, and commitment to person-centered care make a lasting difference in the lives of our residents every single day.
